- ItemChris Brink: Anatomy of a transformer(AFRICAN SUN MeDIA, 2007) Botha, AmandaINTRODUCTION: t is customary at the University of Stellenbosch to produce a commemorative volume when a rector leaves the University. In terms of content such publications have in the past tended to be anecdotal, with a variety of biographical contributions or expressions of appreciation. In principle this publication continues that tradition, but in terms of content the emphasis has shifted towards the volume being a survey of, and report on, the events that marked the five years of Prof. Chris Brink’s term of office as Vice-Chancellor and Rector. Prof Brink was not in favour of a biographical publication. This book is therefore an attempt to compile a contemporary document to serve as a record of his term of office. Unlike previous rectors of the University, he did not retire from his post, but resigned just before the commencement of his second term to take up a post of rector abroad. The contents of this publication present an account of the transformation process initiated by him, as contained in his key speeches and documents. This information was published on the University’s website at regular intervals between 2002 and 2006, while the three essays on transformation are presented as an overview of his term of office. Seeing that the source documents were in the public domain, they are presented unaltered in order to preserve their authenticity.
- ItemChurches, universities and the post-TRC process : impulses from a consultation(African Sun Media, 2020) Koopman, NicoThis contribution, drawing on inputs of mentioned consultation, reflects on the implications for churches and universities of the mandate for a post-TRC process. It is argued that this mandate constitutes a threefold challenge, namely the challenge of royal-servant unity and social cohesion, the challenge of priestly reconciliation and social healing and, finally, the challenge of prophetic justice and social solidarity.2 As can be inferred from this threefold description, the threefold office of Christ is appealed upon to comprehensively describe the royal-servant, priestly and prophetic roles of Christians and fellow-citizens outside the Christian tradition. As such, a brief description of the notion of the threefold office of Christ is appropriate at this point.
- ItemInnovation in South Africa – the role of the Technological Innovation Agency(Academy of Science of South Africa, 2011) Van Zyl, ArnoldResearch turns money into knowledge, whereas innovation turns knowledge into money. This simplistic description of the difference between research and innovation makes the key distinction between producers of knowledge on one hand, and social and economic entrepreneurs on the other.
