- ItemPrevalence of primary papillary peritoneal neoplasia in patients with ovarian carcinoma(Health and Medical Publishing Group (HMPG), 1985-06) Lindeque, B. G.; Cronje, H. S.; Deale, C. J. C.Primary papillary peritoneal neoplasia (PPPN) is a recently recognized disease entity. Macroscopically it resembles ovarian carcinoma. On microscopic examination it also superficially resembles serous ovarian adenocarcinoma, but in PPPN the epithelial cells are single-layered and well differentiated with very rare mitoses, and numerous psammoma bodies are found. In a retrospective review of 61 consecutive patients with serous or papillary ovarian adenocarcinoma seen over a 7-year period, 4 patients with PPPN were found (6.5%). One of these patients was in clinical stage I, 2 were in stage II and 1 was in stage III. All had undergone total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Two of these patients received additional chemotherapy and 1 radiotherapy. After 3, 3, 8 and 4 years there were no recurrences in these patients, in contrast to a 29.1% 5-year survival rate for the other patients with serous carcinoma. Cytological examination of ascitic fluid specimens performed in 3 of the 4 patients with PPPN demonstrated the presence of highly differentiated serous tufted cells.
- ItemProphylactic human papillomavirus vaccination against cervical cancer : a summarised resource for clinicians(South African Society of Gynaecologic Oncology, 2011) Lindeque, B. G.; Dreyer, G.; Botha, M. H.; Moodley, T.; Soeters, R.; Smith, T.; Cooreman, B.; Guidozzi, F.; Hoosen, A.; Mouton, A.; Turner, A.; Koller, T.; Moodley, J.; Whittaker, R. J.; Williamson, A.; Rogers, L.; South African Human Papillomavirus Advisory BoardCarcinoma of the cervix remains the most frequent cancer affecting women in South Africa. Twenty-three per cent of all reported cancers in women are of the uterine cervix. Cancer of the cervix resulted in an estimated 3 700 deaths in South Africa during 2002. The human papillomavirus (HPV) has been proven a potent carcinogen. The aetiological role of HPV infection in the development of preinvasive and invasive lesions of the cervix, vagina and the anogenital region has been conclusively established. Vaccination against infection with specific high-risk HPV is commercially available, and is likely to change the future of the disease.
- ItemTreatment of vaginal candidiasis in pregnancy with a single clotrimazole 500 mg vaginal pessary(Health & Medical Publishing Group, 1984) Lindeque, B. G.; Van Niekerk, W. A.A single vaginal pessary containing clotrimazole 500 mg (Canesten; Bayer-Miles) was used to treat candidiasis during a prospective, mycologically controlled trial among 46 patients in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Positive cultures were obtained from vaginal swabs before commencement of treatment. Swabs were taken 1 week and 1 month after treatment. Four patients were lost to follow-up. One week after treatment 83.3% of the patients were cured on microscopic and mycological examination, and all of the patients had relief of symptoms. The recurrence rate was 5.7% after 1 month. Of the 7 patients in whom treatment was unsuccessful, 3 were available for repeat treatment and all 3 responded successfully to a second course.
