dc.description.abstractENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the representation of Germany and questions of identity in selected lyrics by the German pop singer Herbert Gronemeyer. Under the aspect of alterity, identity constructions are uncovered and it is shown how questions of identity in Germany are taken up by Gronemeyer at different historical points in time. The thesis shows that Gronemeyers lyrics reflect the time, into which he writes but also speak into this time, encouraging social change. In so doing, the thesis opens a perspective onto the social expressiveness of pop music.
dc.description.abstractAFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis ondersoek die uitbeelding van Duitsland en vrae oor identiteit in uitgesoekte lirieke van die Duitse popsanger Herbert Gronemeyer. Onder die aspek van alteriteit word identiteitskonstruksies oopgedek en daar word gewys hoe vrae oor identiteit in Duitsland op verskillende tye in die geskiednis deur Gronemeyer aangespreek word. Die tesis wys dat Gronemeyer se lirieke die tyd waarin hy skryf, reflekteer maar ook in hierdie tyd inspreek en sosiale verandering en wandel aanmoedig. Die tesis openbaar sodoende 'n nuwe perspektief op die sosiale uitdrukkingsvermoe van popmusiek.
