The mother tongue of the cultural deaf, that is people who were born deaf, is sign language. Being born deaf involves a severe linguistic handicap. So far, only an English translation for the deaf has been published in the USA in 1992. Although the Afrikaans deaf community requested a written and a visual translation, work started in 1997 on the written translation of the Bible in Afrikaans for the deaf (ABD).en_ZA
