H ABSTRACT: A historical evaluative study was undertaken regarding the development of the Natalse Christelike Vrouevereniging from a charitable association into a fully fledged welfare organisation. The research was done with reference to archival sources in the Pietermaritzburg State Archives as well as the Archive of the Natal Dutch Reformed Church. Newspaper, journals, articles and brochures were consulted and interviews were undertaken. A literature study was done to bring the development of the NCVV in context with broad developments in the welfare and socio-political spheres during the corresponding historical periods. The historical research project deals with the history of the NCVV over a period of eighty years. The eighty years extends from 1912 with the establishment of the Zusterswerkgeselschap in Pietermaritzburg; the establishment of the NCVV in 1915, the appointment of the first social worker in 1940; the break with the Dutch Reformed Church in 1959 to the development of the NCVV into a fully fledged welfare organisation in 1992. The NCVV was founded by Afrikaner women as a charitable association for the purpose of promoting the moral, cultural, educational and welfare interests of the Afrikaner. The main aim and the activity of the NCVV was however, its welfare function which was undertaken by social workers and voluntary workers. The NCVV developed into a fully fledged welfare organisation playing its roll in the welfare field in the spheres of family care and care of the aged through use of individual work, group work and community work. The NCVV developed gradually from an organisation which only served the interests of one cultural group, to an organisation which is giving more and more attention to the interests of the broad Nata community. Because of the knowledge and experience which the NCVV has accumulated over many years in the welfare and educational fields, it is eminently capable of making an outstanding contribution in the upliftment of underdeveloped communities in Natal in the future.en_ZA
