dc.description.abstract | ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates first-year university students' understanding of fundamental concepts of the calculus. One of the stated goals of the learning and teaching of the calculus, and of mathematics in general, is usually the development of conceptual understanding of mathematical content. The above-mentioned goal often leads to the following kind of questions about calculus students' understanding; Do students in general achieve the desired level of understanding? Do students develop reliable (suitable) intuitive ideas and the mathematical competence to construct proofs, to find counter-examples and to apply mathematical concepts and algorithms in a meaningful way to problem situations? | en_ZA |
dc.description.abstract | AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie behels 'n ondersoek na eerstejaar universiteitstudente se begryping van fundamentele konsepte van die differensiaal- en integraalrekening (die kalkulus). Een van die gestelde leer- en onderrigdoelwitte van die kalkulus, en van wiksunde in die algemeen, is gewoonlik die ontwikkeling van konseptuele begryping van wiskundige inhoude. Die voorgenoemde doelwit lei dikwels tot die volgende soort vrae oor kalkulusstudente se begryping: Bereik studente oor die algemeen die gewenste vlak van begryping? Ontwikkeling studente betroubare (geskikte) intuïtiewe idees en die wiksundige bekwaamheid om bewyse te konstrueer, om teenvoorbeelde te vind en om wiksundige konsepte en algoritmes op 'n betekenisvolle wyse in probleemsituasies te benut? | af_ZA |
