| af_ZA |
dc.description.abstract | ENGLISH ABSTRACT : In this study, I examine the different translation methods used by Afrikaans language acquisition students at tertiary level. The participants of my study are first-year Afrikaans language acquisition students from 2022 who have registered for the module Afrikaans Language Acquisition 188 at the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch at Stellenbosch University. These are students who passed Afrikaans as a First Additional Language in matric and who do not speak Afrikaans as their home language. The research design of this investigation is participatory action research. A mixed methods approach with qualitative and quantitative methods was followed. The qualitative study examines the arguments for and against the use of translation in the second language classroom by means of a literature study investigation. Furthermore, a quantitative study was undertaken to determine which translation methods Afrikaans language acquisition students use. This is investigated by giving different translation activities in the form of different text types to the students to translate. Furthermore, the students complete a questionnaire to determine their opinions on translation as a language acquisition tool. To investigate the role of translation methods in Afrikaans language acquisition, I explore three research areas, namely translation, language acquisition and vocabulary learning by focusing on translation methods, Krashen’s second language acquisition theory and the vocabulary learning process. The focus of this study is aimed at the South African context, as there are few such studies that are related to and based on the South African context. In light of this, an investigation into how and how often second language students of Afrikaans at tertiary level use translation within the second language classroom should yield useful insights regarding which translation methods these students use and whether their methods differ from international trends. This can also lead to translation being used as a pedagogical tool in the Afrikaans language acquisition class. This study aims to help lecturers who teach Afrikaans language acquisition to determine how Afrikaans can be learned through translation methods and how translation methods can be included as a teaching aid in existing teaching practices to improve and facilitate the teaching of Afrikaans language acquisition. | en_ZA |
dc.description.abstract | XHOSA ISISHWANKATHELO : Kolu phando, ndiphonononga iindlela ezahlukeneyo zokuguqulela ezisetyenziswa ngabafundi abafunda ulwimi lwesiAfrikansi kumaziko emfundo ephakamileyo. Abathathi-nxaxheba kolu phando lwam ngabafundi bonyaka wokuqala abafunda ulwimi lwesiAfrikansi (i-Afrikaans Language Acquisition 188) ngonyaka ka-2022 kwiSebe le-Afrikaans nesiDatshi kwiYunivesithi yaseStellenbosch. Aba ngabafundi abapase iAfrikaans njengoLwimi lokuQala oloNgezelelweyo kwibanga leshumi nabangathethi ulwimi lwesiAfrikansi njengolwimi lwabo lwasekhaya. Idatha ihlalutywe ngokusebenzisa i-Action Research. Olu phando lukhokhelwa yiMixed Methods Approach kuba lusebenzise uyilo lophando iQualitative research design kunye ne-Quantitative research design. iQualitative research kolu phando iphonononga iingxoxo kunye nokuchasana nokusetyenziswa koguqulo kwiklasi yolwimi lwesibini ngophando loncwadi. Ngaphaya koko, iQualitative research kolu phando yenziwa ukuze kubonwe okokuqala ukuba zeziphi iindlela zokuguqulela abafundi abazisebenzisayo ekufundeni ulwimi lwesiAfrikansi. Oku kuphandwa ngokunika imisebenzi eyahlukeneyo yoguqulo ngohlobo lweentlobo zeetekisi kubafundi ukuze baguqulele. Ngaphaya koko, abafundi baphendula ikhweshine yokujonga izimvo zabo ngoguqulo njengesixhobo sokufumana ulwimi. Ukuphanda indima yeendlela zokuguqulela ekufundeni ulwimi lwesiAfrikansi, ndiphonononga iinkalo ezintathu zophando ezizezi, uguqulo-lwimi, ukufundwa kolwimi, nokufunda isigama ngokujolisa kwithiyori ka-Krashen yokufunda ulwimi lwesibini kunye nenkqubo yokufunda isigama. Olu phando lujolise kumxholo woMzantsi Afrika, njengoko zimbalwa izifundo ezilolo hlobo ezinxibeleleneyo nezisekelwe kwimeko yaseMzantsi Afrika. Ngenxa yoku, uphando malunga nokuba abafundi bolwimi lwesibini lwesiAfrikansi balusebenzisa kangakanani kwaye kangaphi uguqulo-lwimi kwigumbi lokufundela lolwimi lwesibini kwinqanaba lemfundo ephakamileyo, kufuneka luvelise ulwazi oluluncedo malunga nokuba zeziphi iindlela zoguqulo ezisetyenziswa ngaba bafundi kwanokuba iindlela zabo zohlukile kwiintsingiselo zamazwe ngamazwe. Olu phando lusenokukhokelela ekubeni uguqulo-lwimi lusetyenziswe njengesixhobo sokufundisa kwiklasi yokufunda ulwimi lwesiAfrikansi. Olu phononongo lujolise ekuncedeni abahlohli abafundisa ulwimi lwesiAfrikansi njengolwimi lwesibini baqonde ukuba isiAfrikansi sinokufundwa njani ngeendlela zokuguqulela nokuba iindlela zokuguqulela zingabandakanywa njani njengesixhobo sokufundisa kwiindlela ezikhoyo zokufundisa ukuphucula nokuququzelela ukufundwa kolwimi lwesiAfrikansi. | xh_ZA |
