Abstract
Acute respiratory infections (ARls) are a leading
cause of death in South African children.' Most
of these deaths are from pneumonia and are
potentially preventable, bur the necessary steps to
address the problem have not been taken. In this South Africa lags behind much of the industrialised world and several African countries.
