Abstract
This study explores the manner in which the incomprehensibility of people’s lives and the relativity of history are portrayed in Sleuteloog by Hella Haasse. The expansion of these two themes focuses on the roles of perspective and focalisation and their connection to the identity of the self and the “other” against the backdrop of Dutch India /Indonesia and the Netherlands.
