- ItemComplications in 8,509 laparoscopic Falope ring sterilizations performed under local anaesthesia(Health & Medical Publishing Group, 1983) Pattinson, R. C.; Louw, N. S.; Engelbrecht, B.; Nieuwoudt, A. J.During the 3-year period 1 January 1980 - 31 December 1982, 8,509 laparoscopic Falope ring sterilizations were performed under local anaesthesia in rural areas of the Cape Province by the Sterilization Service of Tygerberg Hospital. Despite the fact that 476 of the patients had undergone previous lower abdominnal surgery, major complications (anaphylactic shock after injections of lignocaine and inadvertent perforation of the bladder by the trocar) occurred in only 2 cases. It was not possible to complete the sterilization under local anaesthesia in 98 cases, resulting in a technical failure rate of 1.15%. A prospective study of the minor complications encountered among the 193 patients sterilized during November 1982 showed that torn tubes occrred in 3.1% and uterine perforation in 2.1%. This can be partially explained by the fact that evidence of previous pelvic infection was seen during laparoscopy in 9.3% of cases. The pregnancy rates after sterilization was 0.28% for the group as a whole.
- ItemHerinplantasie van die Fallopius-buise(Health & Medical Publishing Group, 1980) Louw, N. S.Surgical re-implantation of the Fallopian tubes into the uterine cavity has almost become redundant in view of the improved technique of microsurgical tuboplasty. A series of 10 cases are reported in which the conventional method of re-implantation was employed. The successful pregnancy rate of 60% compares favorably with the best results obtained by microsurgery.

- ItemThiamine deficiency-induced gestational polyneuropathy and encephalopathy : a case report(Health & Medical Publishing Group, 1985) Nel, J. T.; Van Heyningen, C. F.; Van Eeden, S. F.; Labadarios, D.; Louw, N. S.A 22-year-old multigravida presented with polyneuropathy and encephalopathy at 18 weeks' pregnancy. After excluding other applicable conditions, the diagnosis of a hyperemesis-induced thiamine deficiency was made. With the necessary vitamin supplementation the patient gradually recovered over a period of 4 months and was delivered of a normal infant at term. Gestational polyneuropathy and encephalopathy due to thiamine deficiency has very rarely been reported. The literature is reviewed with discussion of the differential diagnosis, the treatment and the prognosis.
- ItemVoorkoms van asimptomatiese bakteriurie tydens swangerskap met behulp van die Dornfest-metode as siftingstoets(Health & Medical Publishing Group, 1982) De Wet, A.; Louw, N. S.In a study to assess the incidence of asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnancy, as determined by the Dornfest method of urine examination, results proved to be positive in 7% of patients. Of these patients 28% developed acute pyelonephritis during pregnancy. The Dornfest method can be used successfully as a screening test for asymptomatic bacteriuria at antenatal visits and the necessary treatment can be instituted, lowering the incidence of acute pyelonephritis, a condition which remains the most frequent cause for admission to hospital of a pregnant patient.
- ItemWhither human reproduction?(Health & Medical Publishing Group, 1981) Louw, N. S.No commandment of the Lord has been so. meticulously obeyed as the one in Genesis I :28: 'and God blessed them and said to them: Be fruitful and fill the earth'. Of all the species on- this planet, man has really proved to be the survivor of the fittest, mainly because of his extraordinary adaptability to changing circumstances, his higher intellect, and his ability to plan ahead for his own protection and safety.
