N.Bladder neck incompetence is responsible for 15,5% of true anatomical defects that cause stress incontinence in the female. Confirmation of the diagnosis of this condition, as well as a new surgical technique for the repair of the defect, is described.

N.From May 1976 until January 1981 74 patients received 76 renal transplants at Tygerberg Hospital. Forty-one patients (55%) developed at least one surgical complication. Four patients (5.4%) died from widespread sepsis. In this article we review the possible causes of and preventive measures against surgical complications after renal transplantation.

N.Stress incontinence in women is a frequent and humilating complaint, the aetiology and pathogenesis of which are not always apparent. Routine investigation followed by standard vaginal or abdominal surgical procedures will cure most uncomplicated cases. However, in complicated cases a more sophisticated pre-operative evaluation and a more versatile surgical approach are indicated in order to restore the changed anatomy and function.
