H; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Education. Dept. of Curriculum Studies.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates first-year university students' understanding of fundamental concepts of the calculus. One of the stated goals of the learning and teaching of the calculus, and of mathematics in general, is usually the development of conceptual understanding of mathematical content. The above-mentioned goal often leads to the following kind of questions about calculus students' understanding; Do students in general achieve the desired level of understanding? Do students develop reliable (suitable) intuitive ideas and the mathematical competence to construct proofs, to find counter-examples and to apply mathematical concepts and algorithms in a meaningful way to problem situations?
