U.; Van der Merwe, K. J.; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Science. Dept. of Biochemistry.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study the possible use of acid-treated, naked bacteria as oral vaccines was investigated using TNP-NB conjugates and LPS/NB complexes as model antigens. A novel solid-phase enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assay for the detection of specific antibody secreting cells was developed and used to determine the amount of specific antibody secreting cells in the spleens and smallintestines of mice im,unised with TNP-NB subjugates. It was found that large numbers of anti-TNP antibody secreting cells were produced in the wall of the small intestine in response to oral immunisation with TNP-NB conjugates.
