D.; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Engineering. Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A model for the calculation of aerodynamic loads on a blade of a n-bladed helicopter rotor in rectilinear flight was developed and computerized. The model is based on a lifting line blade representation and a vortex lattice wake representation. Both a rigid and a semi-rigid wake geometry are available as options, while lifting line options include a classical and an extended lifting line representation. Viscous, unsteady and compressibility effects are also included as modelling options. Blade dynamics is restricted to rigid body flapping motion. A literature survey is presented, fundamental theoretical concepts are discussed, a mathematical model is derived and a discretized model is presented, including empirical modelling of blade profile aerodynamic characteristics. Calculated results are presented and compared with published experimental and calculated data, using different types of configurations and modelling options.
