Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Afrikaans and Dutch.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The success rate of the guesthouse industry can be increased by means of high quality service. It has been noted in the recent past that tourists prefer guesthouses above hotels seeing that they wish to be introduced to the environment and its cultural products through the local population of their tourist destination. A study was launched into the possiblities of incorporating local culture, traditional as well as modem, into the package offered to the tourist. Three towns with their surrounding areas, namely Langebaan, Stellenbosch and Clanwilliam, were studied and were found to contain a wide variety of tourist attractions and other cultural products which could be utilised by guesthouses to promote tourism. It was found that the architecture, the worderaft and the traditions surrounding regional cooking of each specific area were cultural aspects very suitable for this purpose. Random tests at three guesthouses indicate some measure of culture transmission, but in most cases this does not occur in any systematic way. The potential of the concept is still totally under-utilised. The process of culture transmission whereby the tourist is informally introduced to local culture deserves its rightful place in the guesthouse industry. Proposals for implementing the concept include the organising of social evenings by the guesthouse, during which local dishes are served, and the guests are introduced to regional music and the worderaft of the area either by the local inhabitants or by professional artists. Suggestions for conveying aspects of architecture, such as the history of the buildings, building materials, ground-prints and styles in an interesting manner, are also made. The recommendations of the study are of such a nature that it can be applied to certain types of guesthouses worldwide, which increases its value to the benefit of the international guesthouse industry.
